Nigeria is preparing for a significant expansion of its sovereign satellite infrastructure following the Federal Executive Council’s approval for the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation communications satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B.

The approval represents a major step in Nigeria’s effort to strengthen digital sovereignty, expand broadband access and build greater resilience into the country’s communications infrastructure. The project will be implemented by the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

According to NIGCOMSAT, the new satellites are expected to extend connectivity to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities while supporting a wider range of satellite-enabled services across government, businesses and the broader digital economy.

NIGCOMSAT-2A and 2B Set to Expand Nigeria’s Broadband Capacity

Speaking on the development, NIGCOMSAT Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, described the approval as a significant milestone for both the organisation and Nigeria’s digital development ambitions.

She said the deployment of NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B would strengthen Nigeria’s national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country.

“Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians and position NIGCOMSAT for stronger impact within the global satellite and digital economy,” Egerton-Idehen said.

The additional capacity is expected to support high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, government services and emerging digital applications. Importantly, the satellites are designed to complement terrestrial communications infrastructure by extending coverage to locations where conventional fibre and other ground-based networks may be difficult or expensive to deploy.

Thales Alenia Space and Israel Aerospace Industries to Build New Satellites

Under the proposed implementation framework, the two high-throughput communications satellites will be developed through foreign partnerships involving Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries.

Following the FEC approval, the project is moving into contract finalisation and technical manufacturing planning. The deployment is expected to take place in two phases, with the first satellite targeted for launch by late 2028 and the second expected between 2029 and 2030.

The satellites are expected to replace the ageing NigComSat-1R, which was launched in 2011 and is approaching the end of its operational lifespan.

Satellites to Complement Nigeria’s 90,000km Project BRIDGE Fibre Network

The approval of the NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B programme comes as Nigeria pursues another major expansion of its digital infrastructure through the proposed 90,000-kilometre nationwide fibre-optic network, known as Project BRIDGE.

The fibre initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s broadband backbone and provide the terrestrial infrastructure required to support the country’s expanding digital economy. Satellite and fibre infrastructure could therefore play complementary roles in extending connectivity nationwide.

While fibre networks provide high-capacity connectivity across population centres and economically viable routes, satellites can provide coverage in remote and difficult terrain where deploying terrestrial infrastructure may be prohibitively expensive or technically challenging.

Together, the two infrastructure programmes could help Nigeria pursue a more resilient and geographically inclusive national connectivity architecture.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Sovereignty

Beyond broadband expansion, the new satellite programme is strategically important to Nigeria’s ambition to strengthen control over critical digital and communications infrastructure.

The expansion of sovereign space assets is expected to reduce dependence on foreign satellite infrastructure while creating opportunities for a more commercially viable domestic satellite ecosystem.

The additional capacity could also support national security communications, broadcasting, telemedicine, digital education, financial services and other sectors increasingly dependent on reliable digital infrastructure.

The initiative aligns with the broader objective of using technology and digital infrastructure to support economic growth under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

From NigeriaSat-1 to NIGCOMSAT-2: A New Chapter in Nigeria’s Space Journey

Nigeria’s latest satellite ambitions build on more than two decades of investment in space technology.

The country entered the satellite era with the launch of NigeriaSat-1 in September 2003 for Earth observation and disaster monitoring. The satellite later played a role in international disaster response and exceeded its original design life before being decommissioned in 2014.

Nigeria subsequently launched NigComSat-1 in 2007 as its first communications satellite. Although the project marked a major milestone for the country’s telecommunications ambitions, the satellite suffered a solar array power failure and was de-orbited in 2008.

A major recovery effort followed in 2011 with the launch of NigeriaSat-2, NigeriaSat-X and NigComSat-1R. NigeriaSat-X was particularly significant because it represented the first African satellite designed and built by indigenous engineers under a capacity-building programme.

Nigeria’s space development programme also extended to academia with the launch of EduSat-1 in 2017 through the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in partnership with Japan’s Birds-1 programme.

Replacing Ageing Satellite Assets

The approval of NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B comes at a critical period for Nigeria’s existing orbital infrastructure.

According to the project overview, Nigeria’s surviving assets, including NigeriaSat-2, NigeriaSat-X and NigComSat-1R, have surpassed or are approaching the end of their intended design lifespans.

The new communications satellites are therefore expected to provide continuity for Nigeria’s satellite communications services while supporting the country’s expanding digital infrastructure requirements.

NIGCOMSAT Targets a Bigger Role in the Commercial Satellite Market

The new satellites could also strengthen NIGCOMSAT’s ongoing transformation from a government-owned infrastructure provider into a more commercially driven satellite services enterprise.

NIGCOMSAT is targeting expanded opportunities across commercial broadband, transponder leasing, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity and cellular backhaul.

The company is also pursuing Low Earth Orbit satellite connectivity opportunities through partnerships intended to provide high-speed, low-latency internet services to enterprises and underserved communities.

Other commercial opportunities include supporting the national Free TV Direct-to-Home broadcasting platform, providing connectivity solutions for telecom operators and enterprises, and expanding satellite infrastructure services into regional African markets.

NIGCOMSAT is also supporting a growing ecosystem of startups developing satellite-enabled solutions across sectors including fintech, agriculture, healthcare and defence.

A New Infrastructure Layer for Nigeria’s Digital Economy

The NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B programme represents more than a replacement for an ageing communications satellite.

If implemented according to the proposed timeline, the satellites could become an important additional layer in Nigeria’s broader digital infrastructure strategy, working alongside terrestrial fibre, mobile networks and other connectivity platforms.

For NIGCOMSAT, the challenge will be to convert the new infrastructure into measurable commercial and developmental outcomes: connecting communities that remain outside the reach of reliable broadband, supporting critical national services, attracting enterprise customers and expanding Nigeria’s participation in the global satellite and digital economy.

With the first satellite targeted for launch by late 2028, the FEC approval sets the stage for what could become one of the most significant communications satellite investments in Nigeria’s next phase of digital transformation.
