Remote working and distance learning amid an ongoing pandemic continue increasing global demand for PCs. After a sharp fall in the first quarter of 2020, global PC shipments have grown by the end of the last year. However, not all market segments have performed the same amid the COVID-19 crisis.
According to data presented by AksjeBloggen.com, the global notebook sales are expected to continue increasing and hit 225 million units sold in 2021, while the desktop PC sales are set to continue falling.
A 30% Sales Increase in Two Years
The rise in smartphone usage and the global shift from hardware to cloud solutions had been driving a downturn in PC shipments for years in a row. In 2010, 201 million laptops were shipped worldwide, revealed the IDC survey. By the end of 2016, annual sales dropped to 156.8 million units.
Statistics show the next two years witnessed a slight increase in the number of sold notebooks, with the number of shipped units rising to 173 million in 2019. However, the global demand for laptops surged in 2020 due to remote working, home entertainment, and distance learning amid an ongoing pandemic. After a sharp fall in the first quarter, the market recovered in the following months, with annual laptop shipments rising to 218 million in 2020, a 26% jump in a year.
The increasing trend is set to continue in 2021, with global notebook sales reaching 225 million sold units this year, a 30% jump in two years. The IDC data indicate this figure is expected to drop to 216 million by 2023.
Statistics show the shipments in the desktop PC segment had been dropping for ten years in a row. In 2010, 157 million desktop PCs had been shipped worldwide. This figure plunged to 79 million in 2020. The survey revealed the number of sold units is expected to continue falling and drop to 73 million by 2024.
Notebook Market to Hit $142.2B in Revenue in 2021
The Statista survey revealed the revenues of the global notebook market jumped by $4.6bn year-over-year to $140.3bn in 2020, despite the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. This figure is forecast to reach $142.1 bn in 2021 and continue rising to $149.7bn by 2025.
The United States ranked as the largest notebook market globally, expected to generate $36.1bn in revenue this year. China, Japan, and India follow with $19.6bn, $9.8bn, and $5.5bn, respectively.
Analyzed by vendors, Lenovo represents the market leader with 72.7 million units sold in 2020 and a 24% market share. HP ranked second with a 22.4% market share and 67.6 million shipments last year. Dell follows with 50.3 million sold units and a 16.6% market share, respectively.
