Nigeria Goes Digital with VitalReg as NPC Rolls Out Online Birth and Death Registration Nationwide
In a landmark move to modernise Nigeria’s civil registration system, the National Population Commission (NPC) has officially launched the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system, introducing the VitalReg digital platform that enables Nigerians to register births and deaths online and obtain digital certificates without visiting registration centres in many cases.

The nationwide rollout, which became operational on July 1, 2026, marks one of Nigeria’s most significant digital public service reforms, leveraging technology to improve legal identity management, strengthen population data, and expand access to essential government services.
Announcing the launch in Abuja, NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf described the initiative as a transformative milestone that places Nigeria among countries embracing fully digital civil registration systems.
“It is my distinct honour and privilege to formally announce the full commencement of the digital registration of births and deaths on the VitalReg platform under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. Effective July 1, 2026, this transformative initiative is now operational across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory,” Yusuf said.
A New Era for Digital Civil Registration
The VitalReg platform is designed to simplify how Nigerians register life’s most important events while reducing bureaucracy, paperwork, travel costs and processing delays.
Through the platform, citizens can now access civil registration services around the clock from any location, while digital certificates are issued where applicable.
According to the NPC, the platform offers:
- 24-hour online access to registration services
- Faster birth and death registration processing
- Secure digital certificate issuance
- Improved data validation and verification
- Reduced paperwork and physical visits
- Stronger protection of citizens’ personal records
- Integration with Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem
Dr. Yusuf said the initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to using technology to improve public service delivery and ensure that every birth and death occurring in Nigeria is accurately documented.
“This digital innovation is one of the most transformative reforms in the history of civil registration in Nigeria. It demonstrates our commitment to leveraging technology to improve service delivery, strengthen data integrity and guarantee that every birth and death is documented accurately and securely.”
Closing Nigeria’s Civil Registration Gap
The introduction of VitalReg comes as Nigeria seeks to address longstanding gaps in birth and death registration.
According to the Commission:
- Nigeria records approximately five million births annually
- Birth registration coverage currently stands at only 57 percent
- Death registration remains below 20 percent
Millions of Nigerians therefore remain without official legal identity records, affecting access to education, healthcare, financial services, social protection programmes and national planning.
NPC believes digitising the registration process will significantly improve registration rates while providing government with more reliable demographic data for policy formulation and economic planning.
VitalReg Supports Nigeria’s Digital Identity Agenda
The Commission disclosed that the new platform has been designed to integrate seamlessly with Nigeria’s broader digital identity ecosystem.
This integration will strengthen identity verification, improve public service delivery, enhance data security and support the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda.
To deepen accessibility, the NPC is collaborating with:
- National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)
- Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON)
- UNICEF
- Barnksforte Technologies Limited
The partnerships aim to decentralise birth registration and legal identity services to the grassroots across Nigeria.
More Registration Centres Across Nigeria
While promoting online registration, the NPC says physical registration centres will remain available for citizens without internet access.
Currently, the Commission operates 4,011 functional registration centres across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas and plans to increase the number to about 8,000 centres nationwide.
The hybrid approach ensures that digital inclusion does not exclude rural communities or citizens with limited internet connectivity.

Digital Registration to Improve National Planning
Beyond improving convenience for citizens, the e-CRVS system is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s demographic database, providing government agencies with more reliable statistics for planning in healthcare, education, infrastructure, social protection and economic development.
Reliable civil registration data is also critical for monitoring population trends, measuring national development indicators and supporting evidence-based policymaking.
Driving Nigeria’s Digital Public Service Transformation
The launch of VitalReg represents another major milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing digital government agenda.
By combining online self-service registration with expanded physical registration centres and integration into the national digital identity ecosystem, the NPC is laying the foundation for a modern civil registration system that is more accessible, secure and citizen-centric.
The Commission believes the initiative will significantly increase birth and death registration coverage while ensuring that every Nigerian can obtain a recognised legal identity regardless of location.
