INEC Launches Self-Service Online PVC Registration Portal, Extends CVR Deadline

In a significant step towards modernising Nigeria’s electoral process, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a self-service online portal that allows eligible Nigerians to register for a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) without physically visiting an INEC registration office.

The digital platform forms part of the Commission’s ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and is expected to simplify voter registration, improve accessibility and encourage wider participation ahead of future elections, including the 2027 general elections.

The initiative follows a comprehensive review of the nationwide CVR exercise and feedback received from INEC State Offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

To allow more eligible citizens to participate, INEC has also extended the deadline for the current registration exercise to Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Digital Innovation Makes Voter Registration Easier

The newly launched online portal enables first-time voters to complete virtually every stage of the registration process using a smartphone, including biometric capture through INEC’s official mobile application.

Beyond new registrations, the platform also provides existing voters with access to several electoral services, including:

  • Transfer of voting location to another polling unit
  • Correction or update of personal information
  • Replacement of lost, stolen or damaged Permanent Voter’s Cards
  • Tracking submitted applications
  • Locating designated PVC collection centres

The development represents one of INEC’s most ambitious digital transformation initiatives aimed at reducing congestion at registration centres while improving convenience for millions of Nigerians.

Who Can Register?

To qualify for voter registration, applicants must:

  • Be Nigerian citizens
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN) or acceptable means of identification required by INEC

Eight Steps to Complete Online PVC Registration

INEC has outlined a straightforward process for completing registration through the Self-Service CVR Portal.

Applicants should access the official Continuous Voter Registration portal and select “Register Online” to begin the process.

2. Create a Personal Account

First-time users must create an account by providing:

  • First name
  • Surname
  • Mobile phone number
  • Email address
  • Password

Applicants must also complete the security verification before proceeding.

3. Verify Your National Identification Number (NIN)

The portal requires verification of the applicant’s National Identification Number (NIN) to confirm identity and prevent duplicate registrations.

4. Complete Your Biodata

Applicants are required to provide detailed personal information, including:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Occupation
  • Nationality
  • Residential address
  • State and Local Government Area (LGA)
  • Place of birth
  • State and LGA of origin
  • Educational qualification
  • Disability status (where applicable)
  • Email address
  • Telephone number

Applicants may also include aliases or maiden names where necessary.

5. Choose Your Polling Unit

Applicants must select their preferred polling location by choosing:

  • State
  • Local Government Area
  • Registration Area (Ward)
  • Polling Unit

INEC advises applicants to select a polling unit that is convenient, as this will be their designated voting location during elections.

6. Upload Supporting Documents

Where applicable, applicants may be required to upload supporting documents before moving to the next stage of registration.

7. Capture Biometrics Using Your Smartphone

One of the platform’s most innovative features is remote biometric capture.

Applicants can use the official INEC mobile application to capture:

  • Passport photograph
  • Fingerprints

The online portal automatically generates a QR code and a secure link that can be opened on a smartphone to complete biometric registration.

8. Review and Submit

Before submission, applicants are advised to carefully review all information provided.

Once submitted, users can monitor the progress of their applications directly through the portal.

Alternative Option for Applicants Without Smartphones

INEC has also provided a Pre-Registration option for applicants who:

  • Do not own smartphones capable of biometric capture; or
  • Have not yet obtained a National Identification Number (NIN).

The process allows applicants to:

  • Complete the online pre-registration form
  • Book an appointment at an INEC registration centre
  • Print the application slip
  • Visit the selected centre for fingerprint and photograph capture
  • Track application status online
  • Receive notification when the PVC is ready
  • Collect the completed voter card

According to INEC, this hybrid process significantly reduces waiting time at registration centres because most of the registration is completed online before physical biometric capture.

Additional Digital Services Available

Beyond new voter registration, the Self-Service Portal offers several additional services designed to improve voter convenience, including:

  • PVC replacement for lost, stolen or damaged cards
  • Transfer of voter registration to another polling unit
  • Correction of personal details and name errors
  • Application tracking
  • PVC collection centre locator

CVR Deadline Extended to July 26

Recognising the growing demand for registration, INEC has extended the Continuous Voter Registration deadline to Sunday, July 26, 2026, giving more eligible Nigerians additional time to complete their applications.

The Commission is encouraging all eligible citizens who are yet to register to take advantage of the new digital platform, describing it as a faster, more convenient and secure way to obtain a Permanent Voter’s Card.

The initiative is expected to increase voter participation, improve the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral register and deepen the use of digital technologies in election administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
