Agencies Respond to Emerging Cybersecurity Concerns

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) have initiated coordinated measures to strengthen Nigeria’s public-sector cybersecurity posture following recent concerns affecting aspects of CAC’s digital systems.

Both agencies confirmed that response and assurance mechanisms have been activated in line with national cybersecurity frameworks to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure the integrity of digital public services.

NITDA Reinforces Compliance With National Cybersecurity Framework

NITDA reiterated that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are required to adopt proactive cybersecurity safeguards in full compliance with the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy (NCPS) 2021.

In a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Mrs. Hadiza Umar, the agency directed MDAs to urgently review and reinforce their cybersecurity architectures to counter evolving threats targeting government systems and sensitive data.

Mandatory Security Reviews and System Hardening

Under the directive, MDAs are expected to:

  • Conduct comprehensive cybersecurity risk and vulnerability assessments
  • Remediate identified system weaknesses
  • Strengthen identity management and access controls across critical platforms

Agencies are also required to improve data protection mechanisms, maintain reliable backup and disaster recovery systems, and enhance monitoring capabilities to detect and respond swiftly to suspicious activities.

Incident Response and Coordinated Reporting Emphasised

NITDA further stressed the importance of functional incident response frameworks across government institutions. MDAs have been instructed to ensure timely reporting of cybersecurity incidents to enable coordinated intervention and containment.

According to the agency, detailed cybersecurity implementation guidelines have already been issued to MDAs as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience across Nigeria’s public-sector digital infrastructure.

Strengthening Trust in Government Digital Services

The coordinated action by NITDA and CAC is aimed at improving the overall security posture of government institutions, protecting national digital assets, and sustaining trust in public digital services.

NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting MDAs in safeguarding their systems while promoting cybersecurity best practices across the public sector as Nigeria accelerates its digital transformation agenda.
