NITDA unveils IT Innovation and Incubation Park in University of Port Harcourt

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has officially commissioned NITDA’s Intervention Project 2019 at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State – the project is a newly built and equipped IT Innovation and Incubation Park intended to serve as the meeting arena for disruptive ideas and emerging technologies in that part of the country.

“Our focus is to produce potential employers not potential employees, this can only be achieved through such interventions that will provide skills to Nigerian youths,” said Dr Pantami while commissioning the project.

The NITDA’ intervention focuses on helping to close the digital gaps particularly within targeted research and learning institutions nationwide.

The federal government IT clearinghouse has helped several institutions across the country in the provision of IT hubs, wide area networking, virtual libraries, digital job centres, scholarships and capacity building.

“The centre is built to provide a platform for academia, industry, entrepreneurs, and startups to meet, harvest and incubate ideas to drive innovation economy or innovation driven enterprises to support our digital economy. This is in line with government economic diversification agenda,” said Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.

Over 600 jobs created through newly licensed data protection coys

NITDA is committed to building capacity and providing the IT support help individuals and corporate entities join the government in its agenda for economic diversification and digitalization of the economy, said Abdullahi.

“On our new project, Nigerian Data Protection Regulations, we have registered and issued Licenses to 27 organisations, which have already created jobs for over 600 people in Nigeria,” he added.  

While expressing gratitude to the NITDA for the IT Innovation and Incubation Park Building, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Ndowo Lale said the institution will leverage the facilities to play catch up and further deepen the relationship between the outside industry  and the academic community which needs to produce young people with the prerequisite skills to serve the industry.

“I can say that NITDA’s Innovation Building happened like magic, something that has never been done for the university in the last 40 years. We are thankful to NITDA and committed to long lasting relationship,” said Lale.

For his outstanding contributions and intervention in human development, Prof Lale led the University of Port Harcourt community in honouring Mr. Abdullahi with a meritorious award during the commissioning of the NITDA’s Intervention Project at University.
