According to global music analytics platform ChartMasters, Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, has amassed more than 14.46 million Equivalent Album Sales (EAS) worldwide, narrowly surpassing Wizkid’s 14.4 million consumption units. The milestone further cements Burna Boy’s position as one of Africa’s most commercially successful music exports in the age of digital streaming.
Burna Boy Sets New African Streaming Record
Beyond his record-breaking album consumption figures, Burna Boy has also become the first African artist to surpass 800 million monthly listeners on YouTube Music, marking another historic achievement for African music on the global stage.
The feat reflects the sustained international appeal of Burna Boy’s catalogue, driven by strong performances across streaming platforms, consistent global chart success and growing audiences in Europe, North America, the Middle East and other international markets.
His recent releases, alongside continued streaming of earlier hits, have helped push his daily and monthly listener figures to unprecedented levels for an African recording artist.
ChartMasters Rankings Highlight Global Success
ChartMasters’ Equivalent Album Sales (EAS) metric combines physical album sales, digital downloads and streaming consumption into a unified measurement of an artist’s commercial performance in the modern music industry.
The latest rankings place Burna Boy at the top among African artists in the streaming era, with Wizkid remaining a close second.
While Burna Boy now leads the continent’s digital music landscape, Algerian music legend Cheb Khaled continues to hold the record for the highest traditional career sales among African artists, with an estimated 81 million physical records sold globally, reflecting achievements from the pre-streaming era.
Nigeria Continues to Dominate Africa’s Digital Music Industry
The latest milestone reinforces Nigeria’s growing influence as Africa’s leading music powerhouse, with Nigerian artists continuing to dominate global streaming platforms and international charts.
Alongside Burna Boy and Wizkid, artists such as Asake have contributed significantly to the global rise of Afrobeats, helping expand the genre’s commercial footprint across digital platforms.
Industry data also highlights Nigeria’s strong consumer engagement with digital music. Over a recent five-year period, Nigerian music fans reportedly created more than 25 million playlists, significantly outperforming other major African streaming markets, including Kenya and Ghana.
Analysts attribute Nigeria’s streaming dominance to its youthful population, rapidly expanding digital ecosystem, increasing smartphone adoption, active playlist culture and a vibrant global diaspora that continues to amplify African music internationally.
Streaming Era Reshaping Africa’s Music Economy
The emergence of streaming platforms has transformed how African artists build audiences, generate revenue and achieve international recognition. Global platforms such as YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music and Audiomack have enabled Nigerian musicians to reach millions of listeners beyond the continent while strengthening Afrobeats as one of the world’s fastest-growing music genres.
With Burna Boy now leading Africa’s modern streaming rankings, the achievement underscores Nigeria’s growing cultural influence and highlights the country’s expanding role in shaping the future of the global music industry.
