Strategic Collaboration Targets Inclusive Growth and SME Competitiveness

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has entered a strategic partnership with TikTok to equip Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the digital commerce skills, tools, and market access required to compete in the fast-evolving digital economy.

The collaboration was unveiled in Lagos during the launch of the TikTok Digital Commerce Labs Programme for SMEs. The event brought together key stakeholders from government, the private sector, and entrepreneurship support organisations. Participants from across the wider digital ecosystem gathered to explore new pathways for technology-driven business growth.

Digital Commerce as a Catalyst for Economic Inclusion

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, was represented at the event by Dr. Aristotle Onumo, Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships.

Speaking on his behalf, Dr. Onumo described digital commerce as one of the most powerful drivers of economic inclusion and enterprise growth. He emphasised its critical role in today’s economy and its potential to transform businesses.

According to him, the future of commerce is increasingly digital, and entrepreneurs who adopt digital tools are better positioned to expand their markets, boost productivity, and create sustainable wealth.

While Nigeria is home to millions of innovative entrepreneurs, he noted that many SMEs still lack the digital capabilities required to fully harness opportunities in the digital economy.

“Today, a young entrepreneur with a smartphone can reach customers beyond geographical boundaries, build a brand, and market products globally. Our responsibility is to ensure that every entrepreneur, regardless of location, has access to the digital skills and tools needed to succeed,” he said.

TikTok Commits $20,000 to SME Digital Training

A major highlight of the launch was the announcement of a joint NITDA–TikTok digital commerce training programme designed to scale SME capacity nationwide.

As part of the initiative, TikTok has committed an initial investment of approximately $20,000 to support a pilot Train-the-Trainer Programme, leveraging NITDA’s Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) network.

The programme is expected to deliver hands-on digital commerce training to SMEs, with a particular focus on entrepreneurs in remote and underserved communities—deepening digital inclusion and broadening participation in the digital economy.

Aligning with Nigeria’s Digital Economy Roadmap

Inuwa commended TikTok for supporting entrepreneurship and digital inclusion, describing the initiative as a practical example of how global technology platforms can contribute meaningfully to national development.

He noted that the partnership aligns with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), which prioritises digital literacy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth.

“Technology should not be seen merely as a tool for communication or entertainment. It is a platform for opportunity creation, income generation, and life transformation,” he said.

Industry Stakeholders Welcome Timely Intervention

Participants at the event described the initiative as timely, especially as Nigerian businesses increasingly rely on digital platforms to reach customers, expand operations, and access new markets.

The TikTok Digital Commerce Labs Programme is expected to strengthen SME digital capabilities, improve access to online opportunities, and support Nigeria’s ambition to build a resilient, innovation-driven digital economy.

Driving Nigeria’s Vision of a Digitally Empowered Nation

The launch reinforces NITDA’s vision of building a digitally empowered Nigeria, where individuals, startups, and businesses can leverage technology to create value, generate employment, and contribute to national prosperity.

Nigeria continues to strengthen its position as a leading digital economy in Africa. Strategic collaborations such as the NITDA–TikTok partnership are expected to play a critical role in this evolution. These initiatives will empower entrepreneurs, foster innovation, and unlock economic opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
