Unveiled on June 17, the initiative is a key component of Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme. It aims to give households access to diverse content, including news, sports, movies, music, educational programmes, children’s content, and dedicated indigenous language channels. All of this is available to viewers without any monthly subscription fees.
A Milestone for Nigeria’s Digital Economy and Broadcasting Industry
The launch represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s broadcasting history and demonstrates the administration’s commitment to digital transformation, economic growth, innovation, and the development of critical national infrastructure.
The digital economy is playing an increasingly vital role in Nigeria’s GDP. The FreeTV platform is expected to stimulate local manufacturing and expand audience reach.
Additionally, it will strengthen content production, increase advertising opportunities, and unlock new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators.
Platform Highlights
- Over 100 Channels: Programming includes news, sports, movies, music, educational content, and dedicated channels for Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba languages.
- No New TV Required: Existing TVs can be connected using a compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoder. Many households with current free-to-air decoders are already equipped.
- Multiple Viewing Options: The platform is accessible via satellite and digital terrestrial transmission (DTT), as well as a dedicated FreeTV mobile app.
- Service Quality: Features crystal-clear pictures, great sound, and an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG).
Minister: DSO Ecosystem a Major Investment in Nigeria’s Future
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, spoke at the launch event. He described a fully operational DSO ecosystem as a major investment in Nigeria’s future. According to him, it would bring significant benefits for employment, local content development, the creative industry, and the broader economy.
“A fully implemented DSO ecosystem will create jobs, stimulate local manufacturing, expand audience reach, strengthen content production, increase advertising opportunities, and unlock new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators,” he said.
He stressed:
“The Digital Switch Over project is not simply a technological transition, it is a critical step towards modernising the country’s broadcasting industry.”
Idris credited the success to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support and leadership. He pointed out that the Renewed Hope Agenda prioritises digital transformation and infrastructure development. These, he said, are central to the administration’s vision for national progress.
“This launch is not merely a broadcasting milestone; it is part of a broader national effort by the Federal Government to build a more connected, more competitive, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he stated.
NBC: FreeTV Deepens Digital Inclusion and Creates Opportunities
According to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the platform aligns with ongoing efforts to deepen digital inclusion and ensure that more Nigerians benefit from technological advancements regardless of their location or income level. The initiative is also expected to boost local content production and create employment opportunities across the creative and broadcasting industries.
Director-General of the NBC, Charles Ebuebu, said: “FreeTV speaks directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope towards expanding access, creating opportunity, and ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or income, can benefit from the digital economy.”
Ebuebu added that the launch opens a new window for local content makers.
“With FreeTV, families across Nigeria can enjoy quality digital television without a monthly subscription, while our local content producers, technicians, and young creatives gain new platforms and new jobs.”
Significant Milestone from Analogue to Digital Broadcasting
The launch marks another significant milestone in Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. The final analogue switch-off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028.
Idris commended NIGCOMSAT, NBC, BON, ARCON, DigiTeam, broadcasters, manufacturers, and other stakeholders for their contributions, describing the FreeTV and DSO launch as the beginning of a new era for broadcasting in Nigeria.
