The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is to review the current InfraCo framework and satellite operators license in order to meet Nigeria’s new 2025 broadband target.
Speaking at the recent sectoral virtual forum organised by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said “the commission is in the process of reviewing the Infraco framework, as mandated by new Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NBP 2020 – 2025).”
In addition, the commission is also in the process of issuing last mile satellite operators license to provide broadband services.
Nigeria’s chief telecom regulator said both actions are geared towards expanding broadband infrastructure across the country in line with the 70% broadband target for 2025.
Reviewing the Infraco framework will allow operators pull in more investment to close the infrastructure gaps particularly in the hinterlands. Notably, it will address the under-utilization of submarine broadband landing capacity, Danbatta said.
For satellite broadband and to further enhance spectrum utilization, the NCC has licensed 55 commercial satellite space segment providers with landing footprints across the country, Danbatta told the audience during the virtual conference.
