As the official shared services and digital infrastructure provider to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Galaxy Backbone has emerged as one of the country’s most critical digital economy institutions, underpinning public-sector efficiency, secure data hosting, and digital governance.

From Government Connectivity to Digital Economy Backbone

Professor Adeyanju explained that Galaxy Backbone was established with a clear mandate: to eliminate duplication of ICT investments across government, improve efficiency, enhance service delivery, and build a resilient digital foundation capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term development goals.

“The vision was simple but powerful — to create a connected government, eliminate duplication, improve efficiency, enhance service delivery, and build a digital foundation capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term development aspirations,” Adeyanju said.

Incorporated in 2006 to deliver unified ICT infrastructure to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Galaxy Backbone has evolved into a full-spectrum digital services provider, delivering cloud computing, data centre services, colocation, hosting, connectivity, and cybersecurity solutions to both the public and private sectors.

Building Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure

Over two decades, Galaxy Backbone has played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure, which Adeyanju described as being as critical to 21st-century national development as roads, rail, and power.

Today, the organisation’s fibre optic infrastructure spans nearly 30 states, seamlessly connecting government institutions nationwide. Its Uptime Institute-certified Tier III and Tier IV data centres provide secure, resilient environments for hosting mission-critical government applications and sensitive public data.

These facilities, Adeyanju noted, significantly strengthen Nigeria’s data sovereignty, ensure business continuity, and safeguard critical national information assets within the country.

One Government Cloud and Shared Digital Services

A major pillar of Galaxy Backbone’s contribution to Nigeria’s digital economy is its One Government Cloud platform and suite of shared digital services. These platforms enable MDAs to access scalable, secure technology solutions without the high cost of building independent infrastructure.

Among its flagship solutions are Govmail, Nigeria’s homegrown official government email platform, collaboration tools, hosting services, connectivity solutions, and shared applications that support thousands of public servants and hundreds of institutions daily.

According to Adeyanju, these platforms are accelerating digital governance by improving inter-agency collaboration, enhancing transparency, and reducing inefficiencies across government.

Measuring Impact Beyond Infrastructure

The Galaxy Backbone CEO stressed that the organisation’s value is measured not by infrastructure assets alone, but by their real-world impact on governance and national development.

“The true value of Galaxy Backbone is measured by faster government services, improved collaboration between institutions, enhanced transparency and accountability, stronger cybersecurity and digital trust, reduced duplication of public investments, and ultimately improved service delivery to Nigerians,” he said.

These outcomes, he noted, directly support Nigeria’s digital economy ambitions by creating a trusted, efficient and resilient digital environment for public and private sector innovation.

Preparing Nigeria for the Next Digital Era

Looking ahead, Adeyanju said Galaxy Backbone is actively preparing for a new technological era defined by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data analytics, automation, blockchain, and cybersecurity.

He emphasized that Nigeria must actively harness these technologies rather than remain a passive consumer, positioning Galaxy Backbone as a platform for innovation, collaboration, and inclusive digital growth.

“We choose to lead. We choose to innovate. We choose to collaborate. And we choose to build,” Adeyanju declared.

The next phase of Galaxy Backbone’s growth will focus on maximising existing digital infrastructure, expanding access to sub-national governments and businesses, and creating broader opportunities for Nigerians to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

A Strategic Pillar of Nigeria’s Digital Economy

As Galaxy Backbone marks 20 years of operations, its evolution from a basic connectivity provider into one of Nigeria’s most strategic digital infrastructure institutions underscores its central role in the country’s digital transformation journey.

With a renewed focus on AI, cloud services, cybersecurity, and digital sovereignty, Galaxy Backbone is positioning itself not only as a national asset, but as a leading digital transformation institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
