Net users in Nigeria can now smile the more as mobile network operator (MVO)Airtel Nigeria announced a downward review of its tariff plans. The new deal should expand the portfolio of access across market segments for all of the MVO’s existing subscribers and woo new users in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive telecom sector.

 

With the new deal, Airtel’s internet subscribers can now enjoy a super 30 megabyte(mb) for 100naira and a whopping 7gigabyte (gb) for 3,500naira per month. To subscribe, subscribers only need to dial *141#.

 

Nigeria’s mobile internet market is the largest on the continent with over 85 million connected to the web via mobile browsers.  MTN Nigeria leads the market with a total of 41,835,294 internet subscribers at the beginning of October 2015 but had 39,924,737 data subscribers at the end of December, a loss of almost two million customers. Airtel had 17,730,955 internet customers at Q4 2015 but ended with 16,835,952 at the start of Q1,2016 – a loss of nearly 900,000 subscribers. Globacom had 25,082,066 subscribers in December, to make the second on the table while Airtel takes the third spot. Etisalat is fourth.

 

All MVOs have unleashed various data suites since the start of the year to excite the market and woo subscribers over. Airtel’s new call will be raising the bar as the telcopuishes for the top most spot. Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Ahmed Mokhles, while speaking on the reviewed data plans in Lagos,said the data offering was designed specifically to cater for the needs of the various segments of mobile internet consumers.
