President’s Address: ‘The Age of the Sovereign Learner’
Addressing the matriculating class, the President of AIT, Professor Clement K. Dzidonu, congratulated the students on their admission and challenged them to embrace what he termed “The Age of the Sovereign Learner.”
He emphasized that the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation demands graduates who are capable of independent thinking, continuous learning, innovation, and responsible leadership.
Professor Dzidonu observed that universities serve a purpose beyond simply awarding degrees. Their true mission, he said, is to develop capable human beings. These individuals must think critically, solve problems creatively, adapt to change, and make meaningful contributions to society.
He reiterated AIT’s commitment to producing graduates who are technically competent, ethically grounded, intellectually curious, and globally competitive.
The OPD Perspective: Opportunity, Possibility, Difference
The President spoke on the theme, “Preparing the Sovereign Learner for a World of Opportunity, Possibility and Difference.” He encouraged students to adopt the Opportunity–Possibility–Difference (OPD) Perspective—recognizing opportunities, exploring possibilities, and creating meaningful change in their lives and communities. He also urged them to look beyond exams and certificates, concentrating instead on building capability, character, and courage.
Call to Commitment and Excellence
Professor Dzidonu issued a further challenge to the newly admitted students. He encouraged them to fully utilize the opportunities at AIT by attending lectures consistently and acting ethically. The world-renowned computer scientist also called on them to manage their time wisely and embrace lifelong learning.
He reminded them that success at the university would depend not only on the resources and support systems provided by AIT but also on their personal commitment to excellence and self-development.
Student Pledge
Mr. Samuel Peace Kamara delivered the acceptance speech on behalf of the newly admitted students. He expressed appreciation to the university’s leadership, faculty, and staff. The gratitude was specifically for the warm reception extended to the new students.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, he made a solemn pledge. He promised that they would uphold the university’s values and work diligently in their academic pursuits. He further committed that they would strive to become responsible professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
 The Pursue of Excellence
The ceremony ended with a formal declaration welcoming the students as members of the university community. They were encouraged to seize the opportunities available to them.
The new students were also urged to pursue excellence and make positive contributions to both national and global development.
