To deepen strategic awareness on the implementation of the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and Nigeria’s readiness for the digital economy, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) recently held a one-day workshop for data protection officers in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The NDPR provides framework for data controllers and processors on the rights of data subjects, basis of processing personal data and transfer of data outside Nigeria among others. Part of the NDPR requires data controllers whether in the private or public sector to submit annual audit reports on collected data.

Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said that the NDPR does not mandate that every data controller must designate a data protection officer (DPO), however, in line with global best practice, organisations who deal in large data sets, governments and those whose processes involve regular use of personal data must designate a DPO.

The DG recalled that, “on 25th January, 2019, the current Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, as the then Director General of NITDA, issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) pursuant to Section 6(a, c) of the NITDA Act, 2007. This visionary move has become a game changer for the digital economy aspirations of Nigeria.”

“The interest and turnout for this workshop is a testament to the fact that Nigerians appreciate what the NITDA is trying to do in the area of data protection. I make bold to say that the moderate success we have achieved is as a result of your support, questions and interest for us to get it right as a nation in this interesting area,” added Abdullahi who was represented by NITDA’s Head Southwest Zonal Office, Mrs. Chioma Okee-Aguguo.

The NITDA’s boss while congratulating the participants for their emergence as DPOs and assured them of the agency’s full support in discharging their duties.

His words: “I want to congratulate you for being part of those who are blazing the trail in this emerging area. Whatever the consideration for your appointment, be rest assured that NITDA has got your back and we are willing to do all within our mandate to make sure that you succeed in this role as a DPO.”
