Nigerians ports mobile numbers

Beginning today Monday, April 22, Nigerians will be able to port their mobile numbers with the official commissioning of the mobile number portability (MNP) service by the country’s telecom regulator Nigeria Communication Commission. The service will be officially commissioned by the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson at the MUSON Centre, Lagos.

Over 100 million mobile subscribers in Nigeria are tipped to explore porting their numbers in Africa’s largest mobile market of about 115 million as at Q1, 2013. MTN leads the market with over 40 million subscribers. Both Glo and Airtel follow with subscriptions in excess of 30 million each. Etisalat has over 10 million.

MNP is expected to further stir up competition leaving subscribers with the power to switch networks without forfeiting their numbers.

“As it is today, subscribers are locked into networks. But with mobile number portability, customers have the power of choice,” said Mr. Tony Ojobo, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC in an exclusive interview with eT Edge News…. READ INTERVIEW .

The Nigerian telecom space is marked by poor quality of service and high charges. The regulator think porting will provide option window that could make operators to sit up.
