The Nigerian government has listed more conditions before it will lift the ban on Twitter’s operations in the country including that the micro blogging site must register in Nigeria as a business concern and be taxable.
Twitter has reached out to the federal government to resolve the issue, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed told newsmen this week in Abuja.
Twitter has over three million active users in Nigeria. According to Statista, Nigeria had approximately 33 million active social media users as at March 2021. WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, is the most popular platform used in the country. Twitter is the 3rd most popular after Instagram

Government unplugged the social media site last week blaming it for encouraging content capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
Twitter had earlier deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari after it ruled it as offensive.
Abuja is insisting Twitter and other social media platforms must be registered and be taxable entities locally before they will be allowed to operate.
The Nigerian government had, before now, insisted that Twitter must pull down all ‘unpatriotic’ posts including those of the banned IPOB, a secessionist group, before it could allow the site to operate locally.
