First Lady Champions Women’s Digital Skills for Nigeria’s Future

Nigeria’s First Lady and National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has charged women across the country to prioritise digital skills acquisition, continuous growth, and active participation in the digital economy.

She made the call in Abuja during the closing ceremony of the Women ICT Training Empowerment Programme.  The initiative was organised by the RHI in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Senator Tinubu congratulated the 2025 cohort and encouraged them to start small and stay consistent. She noted that “one day, somebody will take notice of your efforts.” The First Lady revealed that similar ICT capacity-building programmes will soon be extended to the wives of executives. She stressed the importance of empowering women urging participants from all geopolitical zones to leverage their new skills for self-development and nation-building.

Senator Tinubu commended NITDA for expanding digital opportunities for women nationwide as part of the broader Renewed Hope vision.

NITDA Reaffirms Commitment to Digital Literacy and Inclusivity

Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, praised Senator Tinubu for her unwavering support and noted that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in economic diversification, human capital development, and digital inclusivity.

He reiterated NITDA’s resolve to build a digitally empowered nation, stressing that technology thrives on skilled people. Abdullahi highlighted the ongoing implementation of the National Digital Literacy Framework, which targets 95% digital literacy by 2030 and a mid-term target of 70% by 2027.

Training Impact: Over 600 Women Empowered in Three Years

Participants underwent a three-week intensive training programme covering:

  • Device and software usage
  • Content creation
  • Digital marketing
  • Online safety
  • Basic digital problem-solving

The DG noted the significant growth of the programme:

  • 35 women trained in 2023
  • 252 women trained in 2024
  • 320 women trained in 2025
  • Total: Over 600 women empowered

He added that under the current administration, NITDA has trained more than 1,000,143 Nigerians, including 32,000 civil servants, in digital literacy and skills.

Abdullahi encouraged beneficiaries to return to their communities, apply their skills, and mentor at least two to three additional women to multiply the programme’s impact.
