In its 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report, NITDA revealed that the platforms demonstrated significant efforts to protect users from online harms, promote digital safety, and align with both the Code of Practice and their internal community guidelines.
Key Achievements in Online Safety Compliance
According to the report released in Abuja by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director, Corporate Communications & Media Relations at NITDA, the platforms collectively recorded impressive compliance statistics:
- 754,629 registered complaints from users.
- 58,909,112 harmful content removals.
- 420,439 content pieces reuploaded after successful appeals.
- 13,597,057 accounts closed or deactivated for violations.
These numbers, NITDA said, reflect the platforms’ growing commitment to fostering a safer, more trustworthy digital environment for Nigerian users.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Trust Framework
The Code of Practice, is jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and NITDA. It provides clear guidelines for content moderation, online safety, and user protection.
It also requires that large service platforms operating in Nigeria register locally, comply with relevant laws, and fulfil tax obligations. All of these are important while prioritizing the safety of Nigerian users.
NITDA Calls for Sustained Collaboration
While commending the platforms’ efforts, NITDA emphasized that building a safe digital space requires ongoing collaboration among regulators, industry players, and civil society.
“We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” said Umar.
Background on the Code of Practice
The Code of Practice was first drafted in 2022 in line with Section 6 of the NITDA Act 2007. It formed part of NITDA’s mandate to standardize, coordinate, and regulate IT practices in Nigeria. Designed to ensure that global platforms operating in Nigeria take responsibility for content moderation and user safety, it aims to particularly combat harmful and misleading content.
