ederal Government Drives Digital Innovation in Legal Sector
The Federal Ministry of Justice has announced a major shift toward technology adoption and digital transformation to strengthen justice delivery in Nigeria.
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made this known at the Ministry’s Top Management Retreat in Ikot Ekpene, themed “Positioning for Digital Transformation.”
Justice Sector and the Digital Transformation Agenda
Digital transformation in Nigeria is rapidly reshaping critical sectors such as finance, health, and retail, driven by government policy, private sector investment, and a youthful population.

Fagbemi emphasized that the Ministry must adopt innovative strategies to keep the “wheels of justice continuously in motion.” He noted that delays, inefficiencies, and systemic challenges in the justice system require urgent technology-driven solutions.
Technology as a Catalyst for Justice Delivery
The AGF highlighted the justice sector as a key driver of national development, stressing that “there can be no sustainable growth without access to justice, respect for the rule of law, and a strengthened justice system.”
He further explained that digital tools will be deployed to address critical issues such as trial delays, overcrowded correctional facilities, and limited access to justice.
Strengthening Capacity Through Technology
Mrs. Beatrice Jeddy-Agba said the retreat was designed to build capacity in Electronic Content Management (ECM). She added that it would also explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal workflows.
She added that the retreat would serve as a platform for strategic dialogue, practical learning, and collective reform ownership. All of these align with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP 2021–2025) and the National Policy on Justice.
Support from Akwa Ibom State and Stakeholders
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who declared the retreat open, praised the Ministry for embracing digital transformation. He noted that digital adoption would reduce stress for justice actors, speed up trials, and decongest correctional centres nationwide.
Towards a Smarter Justice System
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a leader in Nigeria’s digital economy transformation. It affirmed commitment to creating a justice system that is faster, cost-efficient, transparent, and inclusive.
According to Fagbemi, “the challenges of today demand that justice never sleeps, and technology is the tool to achieve that vision.”
