The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced an extension of the 2025/2026 student loan application window for tertiary institutions that formally requested additional time, in a move aimed at expanding access to education financing nationwide.

The extension is designed to accommodate institutions operating different academic calendars, schools affected by delayed academic sessions, and those that missed earlier submission deadlines—while also allowing continued verification of student records.
Targeted Extension to Support Eligible Institutions
NELFUND clarified that the extension is not a blanket rollout across all institutions. Instead, it applies strictly to higher institutions that submitted official requests for more time due to academic or administrative constraints.
This targeted approach ensures that eligible students in affected institutions are not disadvantaged by calendar variations or delayed documentation processes.
Boosting Access to Interest-Free Student Loans
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund offers interest-free loans to support students in tertiary institutions across the country. The online application process is designed to be fast and secure, typically taking 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
By extending the application window, NELFUND is reinforcing its mandate to remove financial barriers that limit access to higher education, particularly for students from low- and middle-income households.
High Application Volume Drives Extension
The decision follows a surge in demand for the loan scheme. As of early March 2026:
- Over 280,000 applications had been processed
- More than 40,000 loans had already been approved
NELFUND said the extension will allow institutions to complete the submission of verified student data, ensuring that no qualified applicant is excluded due to administrative delays.
What Students Should Do
Students enrolled in institutions covered by the approved extension are advised to:
- Confirm their institution’s eligibility for the extended window
- Complete their applications via the official NELFUND portal
- Ensure that all required information and documentation are correctly submitted
NELFUND reiterated that only applications from eligible institutions within the approved extension period will be considered.
Strengthening Financial Inclusion in Education
The latest move underscores NELFUND’s commitment to building a more inclusive education financing framework in Nigeria—one that adapts to institutional realities while prioritising student access, transparency, and efficiency.
