The agreement, effective 1 October 2025, covers 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band, leased for an initial three-year period.
MTN Ends Lease with NTEL
As part of the realignment, MTN confirmed it will not renew its one-year lease with Natcom Development & Investment Limited (NTEL), which expires on 29 November 2025.
That arrangement currently provides 5MHz in the 900MHz band and 10MHz in the 1800MHz band across 17 states.
Strengthening Collaboration Through National Roaming
According to MTN, the new lease supports its national roaming agreement with T2 Mobile, ensuring it can efficiently handle the additional network traffic from T2’s customer base.
The move highlights a broader industry trend towards collaboration and spectrum sharing, aimed at expanding broadband access and enhancing service quality nationwide.
Boosting Capacity and Sustainability
MTN says the leased spectrum will not only meet rising demand for data and voice services but also align with its Ambition 2025 strategy.
This strategy emphasizes broadband expansion, infrastructure sharing, partnerships, and environmentally sustainable practices.
“By leveraging additional spectrum resources, we are enhancing network capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria.
Outlook: Enabling Growth and Digital Inclusion
The arrangement is expected to drive network efficiency, improved customer experience, and wider digital inclusion.
MTN also plans to deepen collaboration in the telecom ecosystem by supporting mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), further expanding service access across Nigeria.
While T2 Mobile’s market share remains small, industry observers note its recent stabilization and see this partnership as a strategic step for long-term growth in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
