MTN Nigeria Shares Retreat After Strong Earnings Run

MTN Nigeria Plc shed about ₦420 billion in market capitalisation last week as investors took profit following the company’s recent earnings and dividend announcement.

Trading data from the Nigerian Exchange showed that MTN Nigeria’s share price declined to ₦760 from ₦780, its 52-week high, triggering a sharp but relatively brief sell-off.

One-Session Sell-Off Triggers Market Value Dip

The pullback saw the telecom giant lose about 2.6 per cent of its value in a single trading session, reducing the market worth of its 20.995 billion outstanding shares to approximately ₦15.96 trillion.

Market analysts noted that the sell-off appeared swift and possibly one-off, suggesting that MTN Nigeria’s latest earnings and dividend fundamentals may not yet be fully priced into the stock.

Regulatory Warnings and Broader Market Weakness

The decline coincided with regulatory warnings over unusual price movements in the equity market, as overall stock market performance softened during the week.

MTN Nigeria had earlier crossed the ₦16 trillion market capitalisation mark, driven by increased investor positioning, before the momentum eased in line with broader market trends.

MTN Retains Top Spot on the Nigerian Exchange

Despite the pullback, MTN Nigeria remains the most valuable listed company on the Nigerian Exchange. Under the leadership of CEO Karl Toriola, the company has consolidated its dominance, at one point reaching an estimated valuation of $11.2 billion.

Earlier in February, MTN Nigeria’s market capitalisation climbed to about ₦14.9 trillion following an 8.6 per cent rise in its share price to ₦708.90.

Telecom Market Leadership Remains Firm

MTN continues to lead Nigeria’s telecommunications market, controlling more than 50 per cent of total subscribers. Airtel Nigeria remains the second-largest operator, with roughly 35 per cent market share.

Industry watchers say MTN’s strong fundamentals, market leadership, and dividend profile continue to underpin long-term investor confidence, despite short-term profit-taking pressures.
