New programme targets girls and young people aged 14–16 through interactive workshops, digital tools, and a bespoke mobile game to bridge education and maritime industry needs.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched its Future Navigators Schools Programme pilot in Lagos, Nigeria, designed to inspire young people to explore careers in maritime and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The initiative combines in-person interactive workshops, digital learning, and a custom-built mobile game.

Government & Agency Backing

Representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the Lagos State Water Authority attended the final workshop, where they met students from a girls-only secondary school.

The programme has already reached more than 270 young people across three schools in Lagos.

Hands-On Learning for Ages 14–16

The pilot engages students aged 14–16, using a blend of in-person and digital tools to make maritime and STEM subjects accessible and engaging. Through workshops and activities, students explore maritime careers, sustainability challenges, and the future of the industry.

A specially developed mobile game lets participants solve real-world maritime and sustainability problems in a format tailored to digitally engaged youth.

Addressing Workforce Gaps & Empowering Girls

The initiative aims to raise awareness of maritime and STEM career pathways, strengthen education–industry links, and support long-term workforce development.

It also advances LR’s social impact goals by increasing maritime access and opportunities for young girls, reflecting LR’s commitment to innovative, scalable student engagement.

Programme designed to build leadership skills,drive youth empowerment

A spokesperson for the Lagos State Ministry of Education said the programme underscores industry collaboration in advancing education and youth empowerment.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Education commends Lloyd’s Register for the Future Navigators Programme, recognising its significant contribution in exposing students to diverse maritime career opportunities while equipping them with essential future-ready skills. This initiative stands as an excellent example of meaningful industry collaboration in advancing education and empowering youth development in Lagos State.”

Also, a spokesperson for the Lagos State Water Authority described the inititiative as an extension of the agency’s focus on maritime safety.

“Lagos State Waterways Authority welcomes Lloyd’s Register’s Future Navigators Programme at Girls Secondary Grammar School. The initiative extends our shared focus on maritime safety and capacity development from today’s operators to tomorrow’s talent, complementing the Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme with Interferry and Lloyd’s Register.”

Digital Learning Platform

Following the pilot workshops, LR will evaluate the programme’s impact and explore opportunities to scale the model for broader reach and future expansion.

Next steps include developing an online digital learning platform that will be made available to schools.
