Spearheaded by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, the state’s campaign aims to educate residents on evolving cyber threats and equip them with tools to stay safe online. As cybercrime rates climb, Lagos is stepping up to foster a more secure digital environment.
Inclusive Outreach: English, Yoruba, Pidgin Messaging
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu affirmed the state’s commitment:
“We will continue to do everything that will ensure the protection of data and assure investors that we will always provide a secure digital environment for their investments.”
To promote accessibility and cultural relevance, the campaign will run in English, Yoruba, and Pidgin across social media, radio, and television. Messages will cover key topics like spotting phishing attacks, enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA), and safe online habits for families.
Strengthening State Cyber Infrastructure & Governance
Lagos is rolling out several cybersecurity initiatives to back its awareness efforts:
- A newly approved Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) role places Lagos among advanced cities investing in digital governance.
- A future State Security Operations Centre (SOC), built via public-private partnerships, will monitor threats across government systems and generate jobs in cybersecurity.
- Upcoming cybersecurity guidelines will help local businesses improve consumer trust, comply with best practices, and attract investment.
- Internal capacity-building programs will strengthen digital skills among government teams to maintain resilient service delivery.
Lagos Eyes Global Standards & Certification
Lagos is also charting a bold path in cybersecurity accreditation. It is pursuing ISO/IEC 27001 certification, making it the first sub-national entity in West Africa to aim for this gold standard in information security. The move signals commitment to international best practices, professionalism, and investor confidence.
Existing multilingual awareness efforts in English and Yoruba have already shown early success in reducing threats and encouraging citizens to report suspicious activity—a reminder that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.
