New data platform boosts transparency, policymaking and innovation in Uganda’s fast-growing remittance market.

Uganda Unveils Advanced Remittance Data Platform

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), in collaboration with the Bank of Uganda (BoU), has launched a new interactive remittance dashboard. This platform is designed to set a new benchmark for publicly accessible remittance market data in Uganda.

Remittances play a critical role in the country’s economy. According to the BoU, inflows reached US$2.5 billion in 2025. It represents about 3.8 per cent of GDP and providing vital support for household livelihoods nationwide.

Strengthening Policy, Regulation and Market Oversight

The dashboard offers comprehensive, transaction-based insights into remittance inflows and outflows. It enables regulators, policymakers and private-sector actors, including money transfer operators, mobile network operators and financial institutions, to better understand market dynamics.

Available data includes transaction values and volumes, sending and receiving countries, transfer channels, termination methods, and the geographic spread of remittances across Uganda’s districts. The platform also provides demographic insights into both senders and recipients.

Driving Inclusive, Data-Driven Decision Making

Mohamed El-Ghazaly, IFAD Country Director in Uganda, said the initiative transforms high-quality data into actionable intelligence. He noted that it strengthens evidence-based policymaking. Consequently, it helps in catalysing private-sector innovation to expand tailored financial solutions. It unlocks investment opportunities and improve the resilience of Ugandan families, particularly in rural areas.

Closing Long-Standing Data Gaps in Remittance Markets

Despite the importance of remittances to developing economies, detailed transaction-level data has historically been limited. Policymakers and market participants have often relied on migration estimates or surveys rather than direct reporting from financial institutions. The new dashboard addresses this gap by providing timely, granular and reliable data.

Supporting Financial Inclusion and Rural Development

Improved remittance data availability aligns with IFAD’s broader mission to deepen financial inclusion and strengthen rural economies. As IFAD prepares for its fourteenth replenishment (IFAD14), initiatives like this aim to ensure remittances—one of the largest sources of external finance for developing countries—are better leveraged for rural investment and long-term resilience.

Built Through Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration

The dashboard was developed with technical support from IFAD through the PRIME Africa programme, co-funded by the European Union. It responds directly to priorities identified by the National Remittance Stakeholder Network, which brings together regulators, industry players and development partners to strengthen Uganda’s remittance ecosystem.

The platform will be updated monthly and accessed via the BoU website and RemitSCOPE, IFAD’s global hub for remittance data and analysis.
