The announcement was made by Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa at Google. He said the update allows users to experience AI-driven search in their mother tongues.

According to him, the new capability enables speakers of Yoruba and Hausa to access quick AI-generated summaries. They can then engage in conversational search experiences using familiar languages.

Advancing Inclusive AI Across Africa

Kola-Ogunlade explained that the update forms part of Google’s broader strategy to make artificial intelligence more inclusive across the African continent.

With the addition of Yoruba and Hausa, the total number of African languages supported by Google’s AI-powered search tools has increased to 13. Google is expanding access to digital knowledge for diverse communities.

The update allows users to interact with search tools more naturally while seeking information online.

For instance, a student in Kano can now ask questions in Hausa, while a trader in Ibadan can search for business advice in Yoruba.

Powered by Advanced Gemini AI Technology

The enhanced language capability is powered by a custom version of Gemini, Google’s advanced AI model integrated into its search ecosystem.

According to Kola-Ogunlade, building a truly global search experience requires more than simple translation.

“Building a truly global search goes far beyond translation; it requires a nuanced understanding of local information,” he said.

“With the advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities of our custom version of Gemini in search, we have made huge strides in language understanding.”

He noted that the technology ensures Google’s most advanced AI search tools remain locally relevant and useful in each supported language.

Enabling Natural Conversations With Search

The new language support also enables users to ask complex questions through text or voice, making online exploration more intuitive.

Kola-Ogunlade added that the goal is to allow Nigerians to interact with search engines in ways that mirror everyday conversations.

“This is about ensuring Nigerians can converse with search in their mother tongues, making information more helpful for everyone,” he said.

Boosting Digital Inclusion in Nigeria

By supporting major indigenous languages such as Yoruba and Hausa, Google’s AI-powered search expansion is expected to strengthen digital inclusion and knowledge access in Nigeria.

The move also highlights the growing importance of local language support in artificial intelligence systems. This has become imperative as technology companies seek to serve diverse global audiences more effectively.
