Part of the initiative aims to alleviate mobile network congestion. It will also and enhance internet access for users in densely populated urban hubs.
Key Locations and User Reach
According to a joint statement released by both companies, the pilot phase will be deployed at:
- Tejuosho and Arena markets
- 15 LAMATA bus shelters across Lagos
These sites have been strategically selected for high foot traffic and potential impact. They are targeting over 200,000 mobile users who frequently experience poor data speeds due to network overload.
How the Wi-Fi Offload Works
The collaboration adopts a Build-Operate-Revenue Share (BORS) model. This will allow Glo’s 3G and 4G mobile traffic to be offloaded seamlessly onto Wave5’s public Wi-Fi infrastructure. Also, this approach aims to free up valuable mobile spectrum while expanding broadband coverage.
The daily access fee is set at a competitive ₦500, offering users up to three hours of browsing over 200 days in a year. It is a model expected to generate a recurring revenue of approximately $7.2 million.
Improving Data Connectivity, Affordably
“This partnership redefines connectivity in Nigeria,” said Biola Akinyemi, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of Wave5Wireless.
He explained that the collaboration was inspired by persistent complaints from mobile users about slow speeds and unreliable access, particularly in Lagos’ busiest districts.
“We listened to the people. By integrating our innovative Wi-Fi offload solution with Globacom’s nationwide network, we are not only solving congestion problems. But we are also laying the groundwork for transformative digital services.”
A Step Toward Inclusive Broadband Access
Wave5Wireless CEO Ayọ̀wándé Àdalémọ added that the initiative goes beyond improving data efficiency—it is also about bridging the digital divide. He emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering affordable and practical broadband to underserved urban communities.
Wave5Wireless positions itself as a pioneer in Nigeria’s public Wi-Fi space, focused on providing reliable connectivity in areas plagued by poor infrastructure and digital exclusion.
Future of Urban Connectivity in Nigeria
This pilot programme is expected to lay the foundation for broader nationwide deployment, especially in other Nigerian cities facing similar connectivity challenges. By offloading mobile traffic to robust public Wi-Fi networks, the initiative supports Nigeria’s national broadband goals and opens doors for smarter, more resilient urban infrastructure.
