As Nigeria’s foremost ICT infrastructure and shared services provider to the Federal Government, Galaxy Backbone reaffirmed that GOVMAIL is fully available, mature, and undergoing continuous expansion to support secure, professional, and auditable communication within the public service.
GOVMAIL Anchors Secure, Centralised Government Communication
GOVMAIL is a secure and centralised official email system designed exclusively for government use, enabling efficient inter-agency communication while reducing dependence on paper-based correspondence and fragmented external email services.
The platform was launched by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. It was designed as part of a broader digital transformation initiative. The initiative aims to modernise public sector workflows and strengthen institutional efficiency across government agencies.
Paperless Policy Drives Rapid Growth in Adoption
Recent statements by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, have highlighted the strategic role of GOVMAIL in advancing a paperless civil service. In late 2025, she disclosed that more than 100,000 official email accounts had been created for civil servants across federal MDAs.
Galaxy Backbone confirmed that this figure has since grown to over 150,000 active GOVMAIL accounts, reflecting accelerated adoption and a decisive shift from traditional paper correspondence to secure digital communication at scale.
Hosted on Sovereign, Secure National Infrastructure
Galaxy Backbone further affirmed that all GOVMAIL accounts operate within a protected sovereign government domain, hosted on secure local infrastructure. The platform is supported by enterprise-grade cybersecurity architecture that enables centralised identity management, audit-trail visibility, and compliance with national data protection standards.
This approach strengthens accountability, enhances digital governance, and safeguards sensitive government communications against cyber threats.
Backbone Infrastructure Powers Mission-Critical Services
Beyond GOVMAIL, GBB operates critical national digital infrastructure, including Tier III and Tier IV data centres, a robust national fibre backbone. Others include a Security Operations Centre (SOC), and a Network Operations Centre (NOC). Together, these assets power mission-critical digital services across government. They aligned with the Federal Government’s broader digital economy and e-government strategies.
Closing Gaps, Expanding Access Across MDAs
The company is working closely with MDAs to accelerate adoption, Chidi Okpala, Head of Corporate Communications at Galaxy Backbone, stated. GBB is ensuring that every government worker who requires an official email account is onboarded within the shortest possible time.
According to GBB, these coordinated efforts demonstrate a unified dedication to providing public servants with the digital capabilities required for seamless inter-agency collaboration. This shared commitment aims to foster greater efficiency, security, and responsiveness in government service delivery.
Commitment to Nigeria’s Digital Public Service Ecosystem
Galaxy Backbone reiterated its commitment to sustaining and building on the progress achieved with GOVMAIL. The company welcomed the renewed focus on digital governance. It expressed readiness to provide technical expertise, stakeholder engagement, and infrastructure support for Nigeria’s digital public service ecosystem.
GBB’s commitment reinforces efforts to strengthen the nation’s digital transformation agenda through collaborative public-private partnership.
