In the early days of Nigeria’s digital evolution, there was a bold national vision — to connect government institutions, unify communication systems, and build an ICT backbone strong enough to power a nation’s digital future.
That vision came to life in 2006 with the establishment of Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) — the Federal Government’s technology company tasked with providing a single, secure, and scalable digital platform for all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
At the time, government offices operated in silos — networks were fragmented, systems disconnected, and collaboration nearly impossible. GBB was created to bridge that gap — to be the “backbone” of Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Building the Nation’s Digital Infrastructure
From its first steps, GBB’s mission was clear: connect, integrate, and empower. What began as a connectivity provider has evolved into a full digital solutions company, delivering end-to-end services that meet global standards.
At the heart of its operations is the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) — a nationwide fibre network spanning over 5,000km, connecting government institutions, private businesses, and communities across Nigeria.
Complementing this infrastructure are GBB’s Tier III and Tier IV Uptime Institute–Certified Data Centres, offering secure hosting, cloud services, and business continuity solutions for critical national applications. Its 24/7 Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centre (NOC) further ensure network resilience, cybersecurity, and uninterrupted connectivity.
Driving Digital Transformation
Beyond infrastructure, GBB has become a key enabler of Nigeria’s Digital Economy Agenda, powering digital inclusion, e-governance, and inter-agency collaboration. Through its Shared Services Platform, over 400 government institutions now operate seamlessly on unified and secure systems, hosting critical national databases and applications.
From connectivity to cloud, from cybersecurity to capacity building, GBB continues to deliver solutions that advance Nigeria’s digital transformation journey, positioning the country for the future of AI, automation, and smart governance.
Ready for the Future
As the world embraces the next wave of technological change, GBB remains focused on expanding its reach, strengthening its infrastructure, and forging strategic partnerships to ensure no part of Nigeria is left behind.
From backbone to bold innovation, Galaxy Backbone stands today as more than a technology provider — it is the digital foundation of a smarter, more connected, and inclusive Nigeria.
