Musk’s New Encyclopedia Aims to Redefine Online Knowledge
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a crowdsourced online encyclopedia he claims will challenge Wikipedia by prioritizing “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

Announcing the launch on social media, Musk said Grokipedia.com is now live, marking another expansion of his xAI ecosystem, which includes the Grok chatbot integrated into the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Musk, who has repeatedly accused Wikipedia of spreading “propaganda” and promoting ideological bias, first revealed plans for Grokipedia in September 2024 through his AI company, xAI.
A Minimalist Platform with Big Ambitions
Grokipedia’s website currently has a minimalist design. A simple search bar allowing users to look up topics such as Taylor Swift, Buckingham Palace, or the World Series. The platform claims to host 885,279 articles, significantly fewer than Wikipedia’s 7 million-plus English entries.
While Wikipedia’s content is created and edited by millions of volunteers, Grokipedia’s article generation process remains unclear. Reports suggest it is powered by xAI’s large language model, which may also adapt or summarize material from Wikipedia and other open sources.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, said in a statement that it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.” It added that human-created knowledge from platforms like Wikipedia has been instrumental in training AI systems, including Musk’s own.
“Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist,” the Foundation stated.
Wikipedia vs. Grokipedia: Battle of Ideologies
Grokipedia’s entry on Wikipedia accuses the platform of having “systemic ideological biases — particularly a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.” Musk himself has publicly criticized Wikipedia’s editorial approach, calling for more “neutral, fact-based” alternatives.
In response, the Wikimedia Foundation defended Wikipedia’s community-driven, transparent editing system. It emphasized that its volunteer editors are required to cite credible sources and maintain neutrality.
“Wikipedia’s strengths are clear: transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement,” the Foundation stated.
AI, Accuracy, and Trust: Grokipedia’s Early Challenges
Despite its bold ambitions, Grokipedia faces major trust and credibility hurdles in its attempt to rival Wikipedia. Critics warn that AI-generated content, when unsupervised, risks inaccuracy, bias, and lack of transparency.
Analysts highlight four key challenges facing Musk’s new platform:
- Reliance on a Single AI Model:
Grokipedia’s dependence on one AI system (xAI’s Grok) exposes it to built-in model biases and limited diversity of perspectives. - Lack of Transparency:
Without open-source editing or public revision histories, Grokipedia’s verification process remains opaque, potentially eroding academic and public trust. - Potential for Ideological Bias:
Although it claims to combat Wikipedia’s alleged bias, Grokipedia’s centralized moderation under xAI may introduce its own political or cultural slant. - Closed Editing Environment:
Wikipedia thrives on open collaboration. Grokipedia’s “walled garden” approach — where edits and corrections are handled internally — could restrict participation and accountability.
Can AI Compete with Human-Curated Knowledge?
Experts suggest that Grokipedia’s centralized, AI-driven model may deliver speed and scalability. But it lacks the transparency, depth, and trust that define Wikipedia’s success.
Wikipedia has a 20-year history, governed by open, volunteer-led collaboration and rigorous fact-checking. All these have made it the most widely trusted online encyclopedia.
Musk’s Grokipedia could evolve into a unique AI knowledge experiment. But faces an uphill task to match the credibility and global reach of its human-curated predecessor.
