Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure
Digital Realty has announced the activation of a new Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) point of presence (PoP) at its newly commissioned data centre in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. The move marks a major step in strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and reinforcing West Africa’s role in regional and global connectivity.

The new PoP builds on IXPN’s existing presence at Digital Realty’s Victoria Island campus, extending access to the exchange across 12 data centres nationwide.
Lagos Emerges as a Regional Interconnection Hub
With the Lekki activation, Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria is now present in all major data centres in Lagos. This positions the city as a critical hub for local and regional interconnectivity, enabling faster and more efficient exchange of internet traffic within Nigeria.
The expansion also enhances redundancy and resilience for networks operating in the country, supporting business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
Strategic Location Anchored by Global Subsea Connectivity
Digital Realty’s Lekki data centre serves as a landing point for the 2Africa subsea cable system—one of the world’s largest cable projects connecting more than 46 locations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
By operating campuses in both Lekki and Victoria Island, Digital Realty has become the first carrier-neutral data centre provider in Lagos with dual-campus operations, offering improved resilience for enterprises, cloud providers, and network operators.
Lower Latency, Greater Efficiency for Networks and Enterprises
The new IXPN PoP at Lekki provides networks and service providers with expanded public peering options, enabling lower latency, improved performance, and more efficient data exchange. These benefits are critical as demand for cloud services, content delivery, and cross-border digital services continues to rise.
“This activation at our Lekki campus represents a deepening of Digital Realty’s commitment to connecting the local and regional digital economy to global networks. By integrating IXPN’s exchange point, we are enabling lower latency and greater operational efficiency for our customers,” said Ike Nnamani, Managing Director, Digital Realty Nigeria.
Boosting Local Traffic Exchange and Digital Inclusion
For IXPN, the Lekki expansion strengthens support for its growing community of more than 130 peering members, including ISPs, global content providers, and cloud operators.
“Expanding IXPN to Digital Realty’s Lekki campus is a significant step in enhancing connectivity across Nigeria. Our members will benefit from faster, low-latency pathways that support broader digital inclusion and fuel Nigeria’s digital economy,” said Muhammed Rudman, CEO of IXPN.
IXPN’s role in localising internet traffic continues to expand. Peak domestic traffic crossed 1 terabit per second (Tbps) in April 2025 and exceeded 2 Tbps by March 2026, underscoring the growing value of keeping internet traffic local to reduce costs and improve performance.
