Bloomwit Releases 2026 Visibility Report on African SMEs

Bloomwit, Africa’s leading public relations and communications agency and academy, has unveiled its 2026 Visibility Report for African SMEs, spotlighting the critical role small and medium-sized enterprises play in driving economic growth across the continent—and the visibility gap limiting their full potential.

Despite accounting for over 90% of businesses and up to 80% of jobs in Africa, the report finds that most SMEs struggle to attract investors, retain customers, and scale operations due to inadequate visibility and weak communications strategies.

Visibility Gap Threatens SME Growth and Investor Confidence

According to the report, fewer than 15% of African SMEs invest in strategic PR and communications, even though well-executed campaigns deliver an estimated 3–6 times return on investment within a year. This lack of visibility continues to undermine market credibility, customer trust, and long-term business sustainability.

More concerning is the finding that only 1.8% of SMEs have basic owned digital assets, such as professional websites—an essential foundation for structured PR, media engagement, and discoverability in today’s digital-first economy.

Key Findings from the 2026 Visibility Report

The Bloomwit report highlights several trends shaping SME visibility across Africa:

  1. Less than 15% of African SMEs allocate budgets to PR or communications strategy.
  2. Only 1.8% operate professional websites, limiting media engagement and structured visibility.
  3. Founder-led visibility dominates, with LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter) emerging as preferred platforms due to low cost and wide reach.
  4. Traditional media remains influential, with radio reaching 65% of audiences and free-to-air TV sustaining high credibility.
  5. Digital news penetration exceeds 70% in several African markets.
  6. Strategic visibility campaigns deliver 3–6X ROI within 12 months.
  7. Over 60% of PR budgets are now linked to measurable lead generation and traffic outcomes.
  8. 76% of organisations track PR-driven conversions using analytics tools.
  9. AI adoption in communications rose from 26% in 2024 to 46% in 2025, signalling a shift toward data-driven, performance-focused PR.

PR as Growth Infrastructure, Not a Luxury

Commenting on the report, Gloria Oti, Head of Operations at Bloomwit, noted that the findings mirror the agency’s experience working with SMEs across Africa.

“In markets with over 44 million competitors, the gap between having a quality product and actually acquiring customers is bridged by strategic visibility. Our research shows that well-executed PR campaigns deliver 3–6X return on investment, yet most SMEs still operate without structured communication strategies,” she said.

The report positions PR not as an optional expense, but as core growth infrastructure that drives credibility, trust, and market expansion.

What Works: High-Impact Visibility Strategies for SMEs

For SMEs that invest strategically, Bloomwit’s data shows that integrated visibility campaigns—combining earned media placements, organic social media, micro-influencer engagement, and local SEO—consistently generate strong returns within a year, accelerating customer acquisition and brand recognition.

Key Predictions for African SMEs in 2026

Looking ahead, the report forecasts significant shifts in how SMEs approach visibility and communications:

  • 60% of new PR contracts will include performance-based clauses tied to defined KPIs.
  • 45% of high-growth African startups will adopt fractional agency models instead of full in-house PR teams.
  • PR strategies will increasingly prioritise multilingual storytelling, including Yoruba, Igbo, and Swahili, to engage the 85% of consumers who discover brands through local-language touchpoints.
  • Cross-border digital coverage will emerge as a key growth lever, opening access to regional markets and international investors.
