Dr. Ogunjimi made this call during his keynote address at the 2025 National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance, organized by the Public Accounts Committees of the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives.
Real-Time Monitoring Key to Transparency
Speaking on the theme, “Fiscal Governance in Nigeria: Charting a New Course for Transparency and Sustainable Development,” the AGF emphasized the need for a paradigm shift from outdated, delayed auditing methods to technology-enabled, real-time financial monitoring that aligns with international best practices.
“Nigeria must evolve from reactive, post-mortem audits to a system where fiscal transparency is embedded in real-time operations,” Ogunjimi said.
He stressed that real-time data access can significantly reduce corruption, curb mismanagement of public funds, and promote fiscal prudence across all levels of government.
Public Financial Discipline Needed for National Development
The AGF highlighted the severe impact of poor financial governance on national development goals, stating:
“Every Naira misused is a missed opportunity—whether for healthcare, education, infrastructure, or security. Fiscal governance is not merely a bureaucratic requirement, it is a moral and developmental necessity.”
He called on public officials to embrace a culture of accountability, ensuring that budget implementation, resource allocation, and fiscal decision-making serve the interests of future generations.
OAGF Committed to Transparency and Global Standards
Dr. Ogunjimi praised the conference organizers, noting that the event provides a much-needed platform for stakeholders to discuss institutional reforms, financial accountability frameworks, and sustainable governance practices.
He reassured attendees that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) remains committed to:
- Prudent management of public funds
- Timely and transparent reporting
- Adherence to international public sector accounting standards (IPSAS)
- Deployment of digital tools for financial oversight
“We are focused on building a digitally accountable public finance system that meets the demands of a modern economy,” he concluded.
