The African Development Bank (AfDB) is driving a new artificial intelligence (AI) capacity-building programme. It will help to strengthen the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.

Through its Joint Secretariat Support Office (JSSO), the AfDB provided technical and financial backing for the 5th Annual Training Workshop for African Union (AU) Member States., The event focused on leveraging AI to track progress on the Agenda’s Second Ten-Year Plan (2024–2033).

Empowering African States with AI Tools

The five-day training, held in Lusaka, Zambia, was co-organised by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF).
Delegates from AU Member States explored practical applications of leading AI platforms, including:

  • Ailyse
  • ChatGPT
  • Google AI Studio
  • Google Gemini
  • Perplexity

The sessions focused on enhancing data analysis, evidence-based policy development, and decision-making to align national strategies with Agenda 2063 priorities.

AI Driving Better Policy and Resource Allocation

AfDB Lead Programme Co-ordinator Abibu Tamu said AI was transforming how African institutions collect, analyse, and present development data.

“These tools are not only revolutionising data processes, but also enabling targeted policy interventions and efficient resource allocation,” Tamu noted.

He reaffirmed AfDB’s commitment to working closely with the African Union Commission and other strategic partners to fast-track Agenda 2063’s implementation.

Peer Learning and Best Practices

The workshop also provided a knowledge-sharing platform where participating nations exchanged innovative approaches to national development planning and results-based reporting.
By integrating AI into monitoring and evaluation frameworks, the AU aims to improve transparency, accountability, and measurable outcomes for Africa’s socio-economic transformation.
