The Nigerian government has launched the Open Treasury Portal to allow citizens scrutinize government’s daily spending.

The portal http://opentreasury.gov.ng can be accessed by all citizens to view financial reports and statements of expenditures across all government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

All government MDAs are now statutorily mandated to publish, on a daily basis, reports of payments in excess of N5m and over, monthly budget performance and sundry other official financial dealings.

President Muhammadu Buhari today in Abuja, during the official unveiling of the portal, directed the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) to make public, on daily basis, how monies that come into government coffer are being spent.

Represented by the Minister of State for Niger Delta Senator Donald Tayo Alasoadura, the president said the publications must be in line with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards.

He said all MDAs are obliged to comply with in line with his government’s commitment to financial transparency policy and to full implementation of the Freedom of Information Act 2014 so that government-held data-sets can be availed and used by the media and the public at large.

“All those doing business with government take note that any payment you receive from the public purse will be published. Ensure you collect public money for legitimate purposes for if not, it will not take long before it is known.”

“With these reports, the Treasury will publish payments of at least 10 million naira while all MDAS must publish payments above 5 million naira made out of all public funds under their purview,” he added.

Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed said  more than 800 MDAs are already enlisted into the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) which provides an easy framework for accessing financial statements on MDAs by the public.
