Helios Towers Marks Major Milestone in Rural Connectivity

Helios Towers has completed 133 telecommunications sites under Tanzania’s Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) programme. It marks a significant milestone in efforts to expand mobile and data connectivity to rural, underserved communities across the country.

The achievement underscores ongoing public–private collaboration aimed at closing long-standing connectivity gaps and supporting Tanzania’s digital inclusion agenda.

Milestone Celebrated at High-Level Event in Dodoma

The milestone was commemorated at an official event held in Dodoma. In attendance were President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Angela Kairuki.

The event highlighted the government’s commitment to extending telecommunications infrastructure to areas where connectivity has historically been limited or commercially unviable.

Expanding Access to Essential Digital Services

Delivered under the UCSAF programme, the newly completed sites form part of a government-led initiative to ensure more communities can access reliable mobile voice and data services. The expanded infrastructure is expected to unlock broader access to essential services such as digital financial services. Others include education, healthcare delivery, and e-government platforms.

As Tanzania accelerates its digital transformation agenda, improved network coverage is seen as a critical enabler of inclusive economic growth.

Telecom Infrastructure as a Catalyst for the Digital Economy

Speaking at the event, Helios Towers’ Managing Director for Tanzania, David Dzigba, engaged with stakeholders.  He stressed the strategic importance of telecom infrastructure in supporting the country’s digital economy and national connectivity goals.

Dzigba reaffirmed the company’s continued support for government-led initiatives, particularly those focused on rural connectivity and UCSAF deployments.

Strong Focus on Bridging the Digital Divide

Helios Towers noted that nearly 45 per cent of its sites in Tanzania are located in rural areas, reflecting a sustained focus on bridging the digital divide through close collaboration with the government and industry partners.

The company said the UCSAF milestone demonstrates a shared commitment to ensuring that connectivity reaches communities that need it most—strengthening social inclusion and economic participation nationwide.
