The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, a nationwide digital addressing infrastructure designed to give every addressable building in the country a unique, precise and verifiable location identity.

Developed and deployed through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the system uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and satellite imagery to assign an 11-character alphanumeric postcode to homes, businesses, farms, schools, offices and other addressable locations.

The government said the new system will provide a common digital location layer for applications ranging from e-commerce and logistics to emergency response, financial services and public-service delivery.
Nigeria Replaces Six-Digit Postcode System
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System replaces the country’s older six-digit postcode approach with a machine-readable, GIS-enabled system designed to identify individual structures rather than merely broad geographical areas or neighbourhoods.
The 11-character code uses a hierarchical structure to progressively narrow down a location, from the state and regional level through local areas and streets to the individual addressable structure.
This means that the postcode is linked directly to a specific property or location, including residential buildings, offices, schools, farms and commercial premises.
The Federal Government said the system is intended to address longstanding weaknesses in Nigeria’s addressing infrastructure and reduce the economic losses associated with inaccurate or incomplete addresses.
The initiative is expected to help tackle an estimated ₦50 billion to ₦80 billion in annual losses reportedly associated with missed or failed deliveries arising from poor street addressing.
Bosun Tijani: Accurate Addresses Can Expand Digital Opportunities
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, described the new postcode infrastructure as an important foundation for expanding access to economic opportunities and strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy.
He said accurate digital addresses would help businesses reach customers, enable emergency services to locate households more efficiently and allow government to reach communities with essential services.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.
According to the Minister, accurate location data will become increasingly important as Nigeria works towards the Federal Government’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
He described the postcode system as one of the foundational infrastructure projects required to enable more Nigerians to participate in commerce, trade and economic activity.
How Nigeria’s 11-Character Digital Postcode Works
Unlike conventional postcodes that identify broad geographical areas, the new digital postcode is designed to provide building-level location precision.
The system uses GIS technology and satellite imagery to structure the 11-character code around several geographical levels.
State and Regional Identification
The initial characters identify the broader geographical location, narrowing the address down from the national level to the relevant state or region.
Local Area and Street
The intermediate characters further identify the local area, local government jurisdiction and specific street or location.
Individual Building Identification
The final characters are associated with the specific structure or addressable property.
This building-level approach is designed to allow digital platforms and service providers to distinguish between different properties located on the same street.
How to Find Your New Nigerian Postcode
The Federal Government is encouraging individuals, businesses and organisations to identify and begin using their new digital postcodes.
Nigerians can access the NIPOST Postcode Finder through the government’s postcode portal and search for their home, business or other location.
Once identified, the 11-character code can be shared with delivery companies, e-commerce platforms, utility providers, financial institutions, family members and other service providers that need to locate the address.
The government said wider adoption will increase the usefulness of the system as a common digital location reference.
Digital Postcodes to Boost E-Commerce and Logistics
One of the immediate applications of the new addressing system is expected to be e-commerce and logistics.
Accurate building-level addresses could improve last-mile delivery by reducing reliance on informal directions and landmarks, particularly in areas where conventional street addressing is inadequate.
The system could also support small businesses seeking to deliver products beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, while helping logistics operators, ride-hailing companies and other location-dependent services improve navigation and delivery accuracy.
For cross-border e-commerce, a machine-readable Nigerian address could also provide international platforms with a more consistent way of identifying delivery destinations.
New System Could Improve Emergency Response
The digital postcode is also expected to support emergency response.
Fire services, ambulances, police and other emergency agencies could potentially use precise location information to navigate directly to households and other facilities without relying exclusively on verbal directions based on landmarks.
The government said this could help reduce delays in situations where every minute is critical.
Digital Addressing to Support Financial Services
The new location infrastructure could also provide a verifiable address layer for financial services and digital identity applications.
Banks and other financial institutions could potentially integrate accurate location information into customer verification and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.
The system is similarly expected to support identity management, account opening, credit access and other services where reliable location information is required.
NIPOST: “Every Location Has a Postcode”
The Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, described the initiative as a major transformation in how locations are identified and accessed across Nigeria.
“Everyone in Nigeria has a location. Now every location has a postcode,” Odeyemi said.
She noted that Nigerians have traditionally relied on informal directions such as references to nearby buildings, places of worship or landmarks when describing their locations.
According to Odeyemi, the new system provides every home, shop, farm, school and office with a precise digital alphanumeric postcode mapped and managed through NIPOST’s new GIS laboratory.
She stressed that the initiative goes beyond postal services, describing precise addressing as foundational infrastructure for e-commerce, last-mile delivery, emergency response, banking, credit and public-service planning.
Digital Location Infrastructure for Nigeria’s Economy
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is expected to create a common, machine-readable location reference that businesses, government agencies and technology platforms can integrate into their systems.
Its potential applications extend across logistics, e-commerce, emergency response, financial services, infrastructure planning, public administration and other location-dependent services.
The government is encouraging Nigerians, businesses and organisations to incorporate their digital postcodes into everyday transactions and operations.
As adoption grows, the new addressing infrastructure could become an important layer of Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure, providing the location intelligence needed to connect people, businesses and government services more efficiently.
