The market value of MTN Nigeria’s 20.995 billion outstanding shares fell to approximately N16.25 trillion after the company’s share price declined to N774 at the close of trading on Friday.

The decline came as investors positioned themselves ahead of the company’s N26 per share interim dividend, scheduled for payment on September 7, 2026.

MTN Nigeria Shares Fall 4% in Seven Days

MTN Nigeria’s share price fell by about 4 per cent over seven trading days, slipping from a recent high of N805 to N774.

Trading activity remained significant, with 2.646 million MTN Nigeria shares, valued at approximately N2.05 billion, changing hands during the session.

At N774 per share, the telecom operator’s market capitalisation stood at about N16.25 trillion.

The recent decline nevertheless leaves the stock well above its levels earlier in the year, following a powerful rally triggered by the company’s strong first-half 2026 financial performance.

N26 Dividend Could Trigger Further Price Adjustment

MTN Nigeria is scheduled to pay shareholders an interim dividend of N26 per share on September 7.

Dividend payments can lead to a corresponding adjustment in a stock’s market price as shares trade ex-dividend, meaning investors buying after the relevant qualifying date are no longer entitled to the declared dividend.

The anticipated adjustment is therefore being closely watched by investors as the market looks towards MTN Nigeria’s next major corporate catalyst.

Analysts expect the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings release to provide the next significant indication of whether the telecom giant can sustain the earnings momentum that has driven its share-price performance.

MTN Nigeria Climbed to N915 All-Time High

The recent weakness follows a remarkable run that took MTN Nigeria to an all-time high of N915 per share.

The rally followed a strong first-half 2026 earnings performance that reinforced investor confidence in the company’s growth outlook.

However, after the sharp appreciation, some investors began taking profits, resulting in a period of share-price rotation and consolidation.

At N774, MTN Nigeria is trading approximately 15.4 per cent below its 52-week high, creating what some market participants see as renewed upside potential.

The movement reflects a familiar pattern in equity markets: strong earnings trigger aggressive buying, followed by profit-taking as early investors lock in gains.

Analysts Maintain Bullish Outlook on MTN Nigeria

Despite the recent pullback, some investment firms remain optimistic about MTN Nigeria’s longer-term valuation.

Cowry Asset Management Limited has maintained a buy recommendation on the telecom stock, assigning a target price of N1,012.70 per share.

Based on MTN Nigeria’s 20.995 billion shares outstanding, Cowry’s target price implies a potential equity value of approximately N23.13 trillion.

Using N774 as the reference price, the target represents an estimated 30 per cent upside potential.

The recommendation suggests that the recent decline has not fundamentally altered the investment case for the telecommunications company.

IHS Acquisition Could Become Another Growth Catalyst

Part of the bullish outlook is linked to the potential benefits of MTN Nigeria’s acquisition of IHS Nigeria assets.

Analysts expect the transaction to strengthen MTN Nigeria’s control over critical telecommunications infrastructure and potentially generate operational and financial benefits as the acquisition becomes integrated into the company’s broader business strategy.

The expected benefits from the transaction could become increasingly visible in the company’s financial performance and valuation over time.

For investors, the combination of improving earnings, infrastructure ownership, dividend returns and potential operational efficiencies provides several possible catalysts for the stock.

What Investors Are Watching Next

MTN Nigeria enters the next phase of the year with several factors likely to influence its share price.

The immediate focus is the N26 interim dividend payment, followed by the company’s third-quarter financial results.

Investors will also be monitoring subscriber growth, data consumption, revenue performance, foreign-exchange exposure, capital expenditure and the integration of the IHS assets.

The broader Nigerian equities market will remain another important variable, particularly as investors reassess valuations following the strong performance of several major stocks.

For MTN Nigeria, however, the central question is whether its strong first-half performance can translate into sustained earnings growth capable of supporting the company’s valuation.

MTN Nigeria Still Offers Significant Upside, Analysts Say

The recent decline in MTN Nigeria shares may represent profit-taking rather than a fundamental deterioration in the company’s investment outlook, according to the bullish analyst view.

At N774, the stock is below its recent peak but remains significantly above its previous trading levels.

Cowry Asset Management’s N1,012.70 target suggests that the stock could potentially recover and surpass its previous high if earnings momentum, dividend expectations and the benefits of the IHS transaction develop as anticipated.

For shareholders, the immediate attraction remains the N26 interim dividend.

For longer-term investors, however, the bigger story may be whether MTN Nigeria can convert its expanding telecommunications and digital infrastructure footprint into sustained earnings growth and shareholder value.
