The event, scheduled for September 24, 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, will bring together industry stakeholders to reflect on a quarter-century of mobile communications in Nigeria and examine what comes next for the country’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.

MTN’s endorsement is particularly significant given the company’s central role in Nigeria’s GSM story since the commercial launch of mobile services in 2001.

MTN and the Making of Nigeria’s GSM Revolution

The arrival of GSM fundamentally changed Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape, replacing an era of limited and expensive telecommunications access with widespread mobile connectivity.

MTN was among the major operators that helped drive that transformation, investing heavily in network infrastructure and expanding mobile services across the country as demand for voice and later data services surged.

One of the company’s significant early infrastructure milestones was the deployment of its Y’elloBahn digital microwave transmission backbone, commissioned on January 20, 2003.

The network initially covered approximately 3,400 kilometres, representing a major infrastructure investment at a time when Nigeria’s mobile industry was still in its formative stage. Its subsequent expansion strengthened MTN’s network capacity and supported the operator’s growing national footprint.

From Mobile Phones to a Digital Economy

The significance of GSM extended well beyond the ability to make telephone calls.

As mobile networks expanded, mobile phones became tools for commerce, financial transactions, information access, entrepreneurship and social interaction. MTN’s distinctive yellow branding, retail outlets, service centres and extensive distribution network became increasingly visible across Nigerian communities.

The mobile economy also created opportunities for thousands of retailers, agents, entrepreneurs and other businesses whose activities became tied to the expanding telecommunications ecosystem.

In the process, GSM helped redefine how Nigerians communicated, conducted business and connected with the wider world.

A Quarter-Century of MTN Leadership

MTN Nigeria’s growth has been shaped by successive generations of leadership, from Adrian Wood, who played a prominent role during the company’s formative years, to its current Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola.

Across successive leadership eras, MTN has evolved from a mobile voice operator into a broader telecommunications and digital services company, while becoming an important contributor to Nigeria’s communications infrastructure and digital economy.

Its journey mirrors the wider evolution of Nigeria’s telecom industry—from basic mobile voice services to an ecosystem increasingly driven by broadband, smartphones, digital platforms and data-intensive applications.

What Comes After the GSM Revolution?

The 25th anniversary comes as Nigeria’s telecommunications industry enters another defining phase.

The next chapter is being shaped by broadband expansion, smartphones, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital financial services and other emerging technologies.

Against this backdrop, the eWorldForum will be held under the theme “GSM Revolution: 25 Years On,” providing a platform for industry leaders and stakeholders to assess the achievements of the past 25 years while considering the infrastructure, technologies and policies required for the next phase of digital development.

A keynote address by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will form part of the programme.

Industry Leaders to Debate Nigeria’s Digital Future

A major highlight of the forum will be a high-level panel discussion titled “What Happens After the GSM Revolution?”

The session is expected to examine how Nigeria can move beyond the foundational achievements of GSM and leverage next-generation connectivity and digital technologies to deepen economic participation and innovation.

The discussion will also provide an opportunity to assess how telecommunications infrastructure can increasingly serve as the foundation for a broader digital economy encompassing AI, cloud services, digital commerce and other emerging technology sectors.

Two Books to Document Nigeria’s Telecom Journey

The eWorldForum will also feature the public presentation of two books documenting Nigeria’s telecommunications journey and reflecting on the evolution of the industry over the past 25 years.

The book launch adds a historical dimension to the forum, capturing the industry’s transformation from the early days of GSM to today’s increasingly interconnected digital economy.

MTN Endorsement Highlights Industry Significance

MTN Nigeria’s endorsement comes at a symbolic moment for an industry that has undergone one of the most dramatic transformations in Nigeria’s economic history.

Twenty-five years after GSM began reshaping telecommunications, the central question is no longer simply how to connect Nigerians, but how connectivity can become the foundation for greater digital inclusion, innovation, productivity and economic growth.

The September 24 eWorldForum will therefore look both backwards and forwards—celebrating the GSM revolution while asking what technologies, investments and industry strategies will define Nigeria’s next digital era.
